S2S Route Description
0.0 Start at the Lake City Fred Meyer, NE 130th and Lake City Way NE in Seattle. Head north on Lake City Way (State Route 522), which becomes Bothell Way after crossing 145th St.
2.3 Veer right onto Burke-Gilman Trail at intersection of Bothell Way and SR 104 in Lake Forest Park. The trail passes through two tunnels and over three bridges. Caution! There are sharp corners on the approaches and exits of each bridge. The trail becomes the Sammamish River Trail in Bothell. There is a brief on-road section on Woodinville Drive.
8.7 Left turn off of the trail after passing under a railroad bridge and an adjacent street bridge. Follow the path up to 175th Street and head towards downtown Woodinville.
8.8 Left at the first traffic light (uphill), onto 131st Ave. NE.
9.0 Take on-ramp to SR 522 eastbound. SR 522 is a four-lane divided highway with a good shoulder here.
11.2 SR 522 narrows to two lanes after the SR 9 interchange. Begin 1.5 mile climb on 522.
17 Cross Snohomish River bridge, which has a barely adequate shoulder.
22 Take 164th Street exit; turn right on 164th (Old Snohomish-Monroe Highway) and head towards downtown Monroe. Road crosses SR 203 before intersecting US Highway 2; right turn onto Highway 2.
24 First mile marker on US 2 to the east of Monroe (number 16). Add 8 to the mile markers to get your approximate total mileage. Note: The mile markers after Wenatchee are inconsistent; at least some of them appear to reflect the old US 2 route through downtown Wenatchee. Rely on your odometer for total distance after Wenatchee.
73 Stevens Pass (4061 feet). Highest elevation on the ride. There are no facilities at the summit.
91 Nason Creek rest area on left side of highway. Water and rest rooms.
109 Leavenworth
128 Columbia River bridge. Stay on US 2 (do not take the business route into Wenatchee). The bridge has a good shoulder. Turn left at the traffic signal after crossing the river.
142 Orondo. Load up on fluids before turning uphill. This is known as the Orondo Grade — eight miles of climbing, with six miles at six percent, up the rock face of Corbaley Canyon — on a hot day it is one of the most brutal climbs in the state.
152 Waterville. After the climb you will think this town is a hallucination (it may be); it appears to belong in another decade (or another century). Don't spend too much time on the cool green lawn of the city park. After Waterville you must deal with the most psychologically challenging part of the ride, a 40 mile section of utter desolation. The rollers are interminable, and each looks exactly like the preceding one. You will find the four mile descent into the moonscape of the Moses Coulee a welcome relief, even though it means yet another climb up the other side.
192 Return to civilization with a refreshing descent to Coulee City. There is water at Coulee City Community Park (on the left, just beyond Dry Falls Dam). Pass by the small towns of Hartline and Almira (both of which have city parks with water and restrooms).
223 Wilbur. Motels, food, city park with water and restrooms. If you look off to the north near Wilbur, you will see trees! A sure sign that Spokane can't be too far away...
232 Creston. Food, city park with water and restrooms. There is a rest area on the right between Creston and Davenport.
252 Davenport. Motels, food, city park. You really have this ride just about in the bag.
266 Reardan. Food. Traffic picks up as you approach Spokane.
283 After passing the airport, you will see a "Bicycles Must Exit" sign. Take the offramp, followed by a left at the stop sign (see map), which takes you onto Sunset Blvd.
284 Finish at the Cedar Village Motel, W 5415 Sunset Blvd., Tel: (509) 838-8558.
