S2S 2008

Date: Saturday, July 19, 2008. 2am Start

Presented by the Redmond Cycling Club, with finish line assistance graciously provided by the Spokane Bicycle Club

S2S is a one-day, ultramarathon endurance ride between Seattle and Spokane, much like the long-running Cannonball ride. The difference is that S2S follows the more difficult route along US Highway 2. It was designed for the successful veterans of Cannonball or other ultamarathon events who are ready for a sterner challenge. The distance is 284 miles — about the same as the original Cannonball — but the climbs are longer and steeper than those on I-90. Total climbing is above 12,000 feet. The course offers some stretches of incredible scenic beauty and others of utter desolation that are quite a contrast to the I-90 route.

Four intrepid riders attempted the initial ride in 1992. One rider finished (Dan Wood, who rode unsupported on his trademark single speed bike). Dan returned on lighter weight equipment in 1997 and set an incredible new course record of 14 hours, 50 minutes. S2S 2007 will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008. The start is at 2:00 a.m.

S2S 2008 has a $15 entry fee. This will help cover the costs to the Redmond Cycling Club (primarily for the USCF event permit, USCF insurance and printing and mailing costs). RCC offers no food, or mechanical support. RCC will start the ride, arrange for a sign-in board at the finish, have a room with a shower available at the finish, publish a list of finishers, and have t-shirts for sale.

Start

The start area is at the Lake City Fred Meyer, at NE 130th Street and Lake City Way NE in Seattle. The start time is 2:00 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2008.

Finish

The finish is at the Cedar Village Motel, which is very close to the place where bicyclists must exit US 2. The address is W. 5415 Sunset Blvd., Spokane, and the phone is 509-838-8558. The accommodations at the Cedar Village are inexpensive but spartan; there are newer motels about a mile down Sunset Blvd. See the map below for a detail of the route to the finish.

Course

The course starts with a cruise down Lake City Way (a.k.a. Bothell Way or SR 522) to Kenmore, followed by a jog onto the Burke Gilman Trail and Sammamish River Trail to Woodinville. Get on SR 522 in Woodinville. Take SR 522 to Monroe, exiting at 164th St. Get on US 2 and stay on it all the way to the "Bicycles Must Exit" sign on the outskirts of Spokane. The Cedar Village Motel is just beyond the exit.
